These are probably the most common symptoms amongst all the ones that patients usually present with. I’m going to cover these symptoms along with what diseases cause them, the differential diagnosis, the pathophysiology and the differential diagnosis.
Before we move on to that, remember that
- Whenever some one asks you a question regarding medicine or a patient comes to you, move systematically. Break down the symptoms and approach the most crucial one first. Ask details regarding each symptom and NEVER forget to ask about associated symptoms even if the patient hasn’t told you himself. For example, if the patient has abdominal pain, never forget to ask about fever, vomiting, diarrhea, etc. That’s because a patient might ignore a mild symptom and tell you only about the one that’s bothering him.
- 75% of gastrointestinal symptoms are due to non-organic causes.
- 25 percent of all malignancies arise in the gastrointestinal tract.
- The most common gastrointestinal symptoms are diarrhea, dyspepsia and the likes.
